On my worktable

another month has begun…

and it’s one of my favourites!

Although daily life has changed due to the corona- measures, some things luckily stay the same. I feel really blessed and grateful to be able to work in my studio these days. On those moments, I can forget, at least for a little while, all the misery and heaviness the coronavirus causes in the world.

Being creative, for me, is as necessary as breathing. It fills me with softness, lightness and hopefulness when the world looks dark and overwhelming.

On my worktable I always try to have a seasonal flower bouquet, picked in nature, from my garden or a combination of the two. Last week I had some last catkins and a lot of blossom branches in my vase.

Inspired by the blossoms, I’ve been making some porcelain branches with delicate blooming blossoms and also some with moss. After firing, they will securely be preserved in glass test tubes with cork stoppers. These unique botanical specimen are part of new creations for my Botanical Stories.

Another vase, a very small one, is filled with the sweet scented viola odorata. It’s amazing what a wonderful fragrance this tiny flower spreads!

The last time my husband and I have been at our favourite flea market in Luik, I bought this old photo album. I’ve never seen one like this before, with such fine golden illustrations. Also the long size is quite unique. I’ve been on the look out for an old photo album for a long time and was so happy when I came across this beauty.

It was quite damaged as it seemed someone had harshly removed the old pictures. But in the mean time I’ve repaired many pages and am going to use them for porcelain botanical creations.

A page from my sketchbook with drawings of plants I want to make inside these photo frames. Every page will have a different botanical theme. The first I’m going to make is with Spring flowers, such as this tiny violet.

Another flower which is now growing abundantly is the lesser celandine. When making the flowers in porcelain, I try to have the real ones on my desk, as well as some botanical illustrations. They are really helpful to make them as realistic as possible.

How all these new ideas and creations will turn out, is something you’ll have to wait for some longer… But I promise to show you the finished works within some months!
